Two Johnston Community College Students Named Goodnight Scholars

Smithfield, N.C., (May 28, 2024) Johnston Community College (JCC) is proud to announce that two of its

students are among those chosen to be in NC State’s Goodnight Scholars Transfer Class of 2027.

Claudia Martinez-Martinez of Johnston County and Truman Phipps of Orange County are this year’s JCC graduates receiving the honor, which recognizes stellar academic achievement, exemplary extracurricular involvement, change-centered civic engagement, and continued success in the STEM and STEM education fields.

Martinez-Martinez plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering at NC State, with a concentration in nanomaterials. Phipps plans to pursue his studies in Chemical Engineering.

The Goodnight Scholars program allows transfer students from North Carolina’s community colleges to apply. The award is $23,000 each year and is renewable for up to three years for transfer students.
